The new Emperor Super-Man kidnaps Dr Omen immediately after she admits to being Kong Kenan’s mother. This causes so much stress that Kenan loses control of his qi and subsequently his powers. Will he be able to lead the Justice League of China to save Dr Omen and his father?

Writer: Gene Luen Yang

Artist: Billy Tan

Colourist: Gadson

The thing I like the most about New Super-Man as a series is that every month I don’t know what to expect. Each issue manages to have the same basic Superman action but every other variable changes. This month, along with some revelations about Kenan’s family, there is some great Batman of China action that features a Bane of China. It’s fun.

Gene Luen Yang writes each issue in such a way that plot points are never just basic Superman stories ‘but in China.’ The Bane of China was properly established months ago and only now does he take his place as the recognisable villain. In some respects this series reminds me of the Ultimate Universe over at Marvel. Stories are different yet maintain the core themes.

Billy Tan was tasked with a lot this month. There are many villains and many action sequences to pencil. He does so very well with the colours by Gadson adding to every scene.

Overall there isn’t much more to say other than this is another fantastic issue in the series. If you’re not reading New Super-Man you should really think about picking it up.

Recommendation: pick up the issue.
